Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical.  It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairytale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance.  Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek.  One day, Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits who have been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wisecracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he's handed a task — if he rescues feisty princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Shrek tries to win Fiona’s love and vanquish Lord Farquaad, but a fairytale wouldn't be complete without a few twists and turns along the way.

With abundant opportunities for imaginative sets and costumes, and a host of over-the-top roles for an expandable cast, there's a part for everyone in this dazzling adventure story.

YOUNG AUDIENCES

Now Booking: In-person Assemblies April through June 2024

Program Title: Perspectives of Pride

This newly commissioned interdisciplinary program focuses on using the power of the arts to bring a message of tolerance, understanding and acceptance of LGBTQIA+ youth issues.

A diverse group of 5 local LGBTQIA+ artists come together to present a series of original vignettes/scenes, songs, dance and visual art pieces that express unique experiences within the LGBTQIA+ community in the Bay Area and build awareness of resources for LGBTQIA+ youth.

The works stem from a team of artists that interviewed educators, youth, local care and culture workers dealing closely with LGBTQIA+ communities to identify core issues facing LGBTQIA+ youth in the Bay Area.

IDA B WELLS CONTINUATION HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM

Program Title: Performance and Theater-making

Over 10 weeks, three teaching artists will work alongside in-school staff to engage students at Ida B. Wells Continuation High School in devising a 30-minute performance of original scenes and monologues. As the students write and rehearse their performance project, they will learn the basics of ensemble theater work, acting scene study, and dramatic writing skills. The theme of the student's project will be 'social media and identity.' The project will serve as an opportunity for students to learn about digital privacy, technology rights, and ethical questions currently debated in the technology field.

The project theme also aligns with the core topics brought up in a full production SFBATCO is producing that will run during the program called PRIVATE. The students will be invited to attend the show as part of their curriculum and will use excerpts of the script to practice scene work in class.

MO’MAGIC PROGRAM

We’re loving our time with the students at MO’MAGIC empowering them valuable skills as a part of their performing arts class.

With the younger students, we’re learning the importance and positive impact of stillness and how to use our imaginations to transform into animals.

With our older students, we are diving into storytelling and dramaturgy, watching and analyzing recordings of live theatre performances and discussing the importance of art in our lives.
